Indonesia's aluminum coinage of this period was issued against a backdrop of chronic fiscal instability under Sukarno's Guided Democracy, a system that concentrated economic policy in the presidency while the rupiah deteriorated steadily. The 50 sen denomination was effectively worthless in purchasing terms well before these coins stopped circulating — inflation had seen to that.
The Schön 9.2 designation distinguishes this from the earlier 9.1 subtype, the difference lying in die details refined after initial production runs at the Dutch-influenced Jakarta mint.
