Rama VIII — Ananda Mahidol — died in June 1946 from a gunshot wound under circumstances that remain officially unresolved. This posthumous issue was struck later that year, during the regency period before his younger brother ascended as Rama IX. Thailand's postwar tin coinage of this era reflects both the country's abundant domestic tin supply and the acute metal shortages following Japanese occupation, which had stripped earlier bronze and silver issues from circulation almost entirely.
