Issued in the immediate aftermath of the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis, which collapsed the rupiah by roughly 80% against the dollar and forced Suharto's resignation after 32 years in power. Indonesia's monetary system was effectively rebuilt under IMF supervision, and this aluminium piece entered circulation as part of that restructuring — lightweight metal kept production costs low at a moment when the central bank had very little room to spend.
