The International Year of the Child was declared by the UN General Assembly for 1979, and many nations issued commemorative coins well into 1980 as mintage programs caught up with the calendar. The piedfort format — struck on a blank roughly twice the standard thickness — was largely a French minting tradition revived in the modern era by the Monnaie de Paris and adopted by smaller nations for prestige collector issues. Seychelles, still less than a decade into independence from Britain at the time of this strike, used such issues partly to generate hard currency through numismatic export sales.
