Punjab National Bank's travellers cheque program ran through the latter decades of the twentieth century as a direct competitor to the State Bank of India's dominant network. Specimen examples like this were produced for internal approval, branch training, and occasionally regulatory demonstration — they were never encashable and typically bear a SPECIMEN perforation or overprint. Security Printers of India, the Kanpur facility established in 1968 under government mandate, handled the bulk of India's non-RBI secure document printing during this period.

Travellers cheques fell into steep commercial decline in India after the early 2000s, largely killed by ATM expansion. Surviving specimens from mid-tier issuers like PNB are genuinely uncommon.
