The Quit India Movement, launched by Gandhi on August 8, 1942, was followed within hours by the mass arrest of virtually the entire Congress leadership — a move the British calculated would decapitate the resistance. Instead, the movement became the most spontaneous and widespread uprising of the independence struggle, driven largely by ordinary Indians without central direction. This coin was issued on the fiftieth anniversary of that moment.
The Reserve Bank produced a number of large-format commemoratives through the 1990s in this weight class, several of which saw limited distribution outside government gift sets.
