The Field Post Office series of postal orders existed to allow military personnel stationed away from civilian postal infrastructure to send remittances home without access to a standard money order counter. The FPO network operated under Army Postal Service jurisdiction, running parallel to the civilian Department of Posts — meaning these instruments moved through a completely separate handling chain from ordinary postal orders of the same period.
The 1980 date places this squarely in the period when India maintained substantial troop deployments along both the western and northeastern borders following the tensions of the 1970s. Whether any given example saw actual FPO cancellation or was administratively voided is often the more interesting question with surviving specimens.
