Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau, established in 1999 under Pervez Musharraf's military government, was itself repeatedly accused of politically motivated prosecutions in the years surrounding this coin's issue — making the commemorative subject somewhat charged domestically. The UN's International Anti-Corruption Day has been observed on December 9th since 2003, following adoption of the UN Convention Against Corruption in Merida that year.
