The Oriental Bank Corporation collapsed in May 1884 — one of the most spectacular banking failures in nineteenth-century British colonial finance. The Galle branch notes of this series were among the last issued before the liquidation, and any surviving examples almost certainly never completed a normal transaction cycle. The bank had been overextended across Ceylon, India, and the Far East for years before the end came.
Bradbury Wilkinson produced the plates from their New Malden works. The watermark security was entirely standard for the period, though it did nothing to prevent the collapse that made these notes worthless within months of printing.
