Guru Nanak Dev Ji's 550th birth anniversary in 2019 prompted unusual diplomatic engagement between India and Pakistan — most visibly the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor in November of that year, allowing Sikh pilgrims from India visa-free access to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistani Punjab, where Nanak spent the final years of his life. Pakistan issued several commemorative items tied to the anniversary, this coin among them, as part of a broader effort to court Sikh goodwill across an otherwise hostile border. Nanak was born in 1469 in Nankana Sahib, now located in Pakistan's Punjab province.
