The P#83 series spans a politically turbulent stretch for India — the Emergency period declared by Indira Gandhi in June 1975 ran through early 1977, and notes from these years circulated through an economy operating under press censorship and suspended civil liberties. The RBI continued issuing without interruption, but inflationary pressure and currency hoarding were both documented concerns during this window.

Four governors signed across the series lifetime: Jagannathan, Puri, Narasimham, and Patel — an unusually high turnover reflecting the political instability of the period. Narasimham's tenure was notably brief, just a few months in 1977.
