Mauritius gained independence in March 1968, and this series — issued under the newly established Bank of Mauritius — was the country's first domestically-authorized currency as a sovereign state. De La Rue had printed Mauritian notes under colonial administration as well, so the transition involved no change of printer, only of authority. The three signature combinations span roughly fifteen years of governors and directors, making the series useful for dating individual notes with reasonable precision even when undated.

P#33 notes are known to show vertical fold weakening along the center crease, a result of heavy retail circulation on the island through the 1970s.
