This coin commemorates the 360th anniversary of Yakutia's incorporation into the Russian state, dated to 1632 when Pyotr Beketov's Cossack detachment established the Lena ostrog — the fortified post that became Yakutsk. The "voluntary" framing in the issue's name reflects a Soviet and post-Soviet historiographical convention applied to numerous minority regions, one that glossed over the coercive reality of Cossack expansion into Siberia.
Struck in the chaotic first year of the Russian Federation's existence, this was among the earliest gold commemoratives issued under the Bank of Russia name rather than Gosbank USSR.
