The Vladikavkaz Railway Company was one of several Russian rail enterprises that began issuing their own paper obligations during the chaos following the October Revolution, when the central banking system had effectively collapsed and wage payments in recognized currency became impossible. These notes functioned primarily as wage scrip — printed to pay workers along the line when coin and state-issued currency were unavailable or refused.
The railway itself connected the North Caucasus region to the Black Sea coast and was a strategically contested artery throughout the Civil War period, changing hands multiple times between 1918 and 1920. Notes from this issuer tend to show heavy circulation wear precisely because they were used intensively in a short window before the Bolshevik consolidation rendered them worthless.
