Arktikugol is a Soviet-era Russian state trust that has operated coal mines on Svalbard since 1931, exploiting Norway's obligation under the 1920 Svalbard Treaty to permit signatories equal commercial access to the archipelago. The company has issued token coinage for use within its Barentsburg settlement for decades — a largely self-contained community where Russian miners have little use for Norwegian krone.
The gold plating here is cosmetic. These 2013 issues are collector pieces, not pit tokens, produced well after Arktikugol's scrip coinage had any genuine transactional role in Barentsburg.
