The Zhyrovichy Monastery, located in what is now western Belarus, has been a site of Orthodox pilgrimage since the fifteenth century, when a miraculous icon of the Virgin was reportedly discovered in a pear tree by local shepherds. The monastery survived the Reformation pressures of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, repeated wars, and Soviet-era suppression — it remained one of the few functioning Orthodox monasteries in the USSR throughout the entire Soviet period.
Belarus issued several gold and silver pieces in the Icons series across the 2010s, each tied to a specific venerated image from the country's religious heritage. The five-gram format was used consistently across the series.
