The Iveron icon holds a specific place in Orthodox tradition: according to hagiographic accounts, the original arrived at the Iverskiy Monastery on Mount Athos in the 10th century, reportedly carried across the sea by the image itself after being cast into the water by a widow in Nicaea to protect it from Byzantine iconoclasts. A Georgian monk named Gabriel retrieved it from the waves. The Belarusian National Bank issued several icons in this gold series across the 2010s, each tied to a specific venerated image rather than a general religious theme.
