The Barkalabava icon, housed at the Barkalabava Convent in Mogilev Oblast, is one of the few Marian icons considered locally miraculous within the Belarusian Orthodox tradition specifically — distinct from the broader Russian Orthodox canon of wonder-working images. The convent itself survived Soviet-era closure and was returned to religious use only in 1992, making the icon's institutional home relatively newly restored when this coin was issued.
Belarus launched its orthodox religious gold series in the early 2000s, partly as a soft-power assertion of distinct national cultural identity separate from Russia.
