Part of Russia's ongoing zodiac series issued through the early 2000s, these coins were struck at the Moscow Mint (MMD) with proof finish for the collector market. The series drew on longstanding Soviet-era precedent for thematic precious metal issues aimed partly at domestic buyers and partly at the international numismatic trade — a revenue strategy the Bank of Russia inherited and expanded aggressively after the 1998 ruble crisis stabilized.
Mintage for individual zodiac issues in this run was capped at 10,000 pieces.
