Opmerkingen

Arktikugol — the Soviet coal trust operating on Svalbard under the terms of the 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty — issued scrip for use exclusively at its Barentsburg and Pyramiden settlements, where Norwegian sovereignty made ordinary Soviet currency legally awkward. These notes functioned as a closed-economy substitute, redeemable only within the company stores and canteens on the archipelago, and were never valid tender anywhere on the Soviet mainland.

The 1979 series replaced an earlier set that had circulated since the 1950s. Workers received wages partly in this scrip, which prevented hard currency from leaving the Soviet economic sphere while still technically operating under Norwegian jurisdiction.
