Ajman, the smallest and least resourced of the Trucial States, produced a wave of commemorative gold issues in the final months before the UAE federation absorbed it in December 1971. Most were aimed squarely at the European collector market rather than domestic circulation — few residents of Ajman ever handled one. The "Save Venice" series was tied to the international campaign launched after the catastrophic 1966 floods that submerged much of the city, a cause that attracted UNESCO backing and gave small states a ready-made commemorative hook.
Ajman issued multiple denominations under this theme, all struck by the Bern mint.
