Two stylised clouds appear in the field to the left and right of the fort's upper section. Umm Al Qaiwain was among the smallest and least populous of the Trucial States when it issued this piece in 1970 — the year before the federation that would become the UAE was formally established. Several of the Trucial sheikhdoms rushed proof and collector gold issues into production during 1969–1971, partly to generate hard currency revenue ahead of British withdrawal from the Gulf in December 1971. These issues were aimed squarely at the international numismatic market rather than domestic circulation, and most examples show no wear whatsoever.
Ahmad bin Rashid Al Mu'alla had ruled since 1929. At the time of this issue he was one of the longest-serving rulers among the seven sheikhdoms.
