Qatar's 2020 banknote series was a comprehensive redesign — the first major overhaul of the Qatar Central Bank's notes in roughly a decade. The 50 Riyal denomination sits in the upper-middle range of the series, which runs from 1 to 500 Riyals, and the 2020 issue brought standardized security architecture across all values, including the embedded security thread and MOTION security stripe technology licensed from De La Rue, which produces an animated rolling-bar effect under normal light.
Qatar's currency has been pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 3.64 Riyals since 1980, a policy that has survived considerable regional turbulence — including the 2017–2021 blockade by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt, during which the Riyal held its peg without devaluation.
