Issued to mark the 1998 Commonwealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur — Malaysia's first time hosting the event — this commemorative note was part of a broader national push around the games, which coincided almost exactly with the onset of Malaysia's currency crisis response. Bank Negara had imposed capital controls and pegged the ringgit to the US dollar at 3.80 just weeks before the games opened in September 1998.
