Brunei's commemorative polymer issues tied to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's reign milestones have become a recurring series since the 1990s, but this one marks something genuinely unusual in the region: a ruling monarch's golden jubilee on the throne, in a country where the sultan holds both executive and religious authority without a constitutional challenge in sight. Hassanal Bolkiah acceded in October 1967 following his father's abdication, making the 50-year mark fall in 2017.
The note circulates as legal tender despite its commemorative character — Brunei does not issue collector-only currency outside formal proof sets.
