Issued to mark Malaysia's 50th year of independence from British rule, this commemorative note was released in 2007 under the "Merdeka 50" national celebrations — a programme that extended well into 2008 and encompassed everything from official ceremonies to mass-produced memorabilia. The note was produced in a relatively modest print run for a commemorative issue of this political weight, which has made mid-grade circulated examples somewhat harder to source than the uncirculated packaging versions that dominated initial retail distribution.
Security specification is notably lean for a 2007 Malaysian issue — the absence of colour-shifting ink or other optically variable elements places it a step behind contemporaneous regular-series notes from Bank Negara.
