P#43 spans the tenures of two governors whose careers were shaped by the same event: the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis. Ahmad Mohamed Don resigned in August 1998 in public disagreement with Mahathir's decision to impose capital controls and peg the ringgit at 3.80 to the US dollar. Zeti Akhtar Aziz stepped in as acting governor and later permanent governor, ultimately defending those same controls to international critics.

A print run of just over twelve million across a three-year span is modest for a mid-denomination note in active circulation. The dual-signature transition makes this series especially useful for dating purposes — Don signatures appear only on earlier printings.
