Bohus-Läns Enskilda Bank was one of Sweden's provincial private banks operating under the enskilda bank system, which permitted note issuance but held shareholders personally liable for redemption — a structure that made these institutions generally conservative but regionally vital. The 50 Riksdaler Riksmynt denomination was the largest unit in everyday commercial use before Sweden's transition to the Kronor system in 1873, making notes of this value workhorses of merchant credit rather than retail change.
The Riksmynt designation itself had a short lifespan — the monetary reform triggered by Scandinavian Monetary Union rendered the entire denomination obsolete within three years of this note's issue date.
