Norges midlertidige Rigsbank — Norway's temporary state bank — was established in 1814 following the dissolution of the union with Denmark and the chaos of the Napoleonic settlement. It was never meant to be permanent; the institution existed specifically to manage the transition until Norges Bank was formally chartered in 1816. Notes issued under this authority occupied an awkward monetary moment: the old Danish rigsdaler system was still the reference point, but Norwegian finances were effectively starting from nothing, with no specie reserves to back anything credibly.

The 50 Rigsbankdaler denomination was among the highest circulating values issued by this short-lived institution, printed domestically at a time when Norwegian printing infrastructure was rudimentary at best. Surviving examples are genuinely rare — the bank's lifespan was under two years, redemption and reissuance through Norges Bank pulled most notes out of circulation quickly.
