Oman's 50 Rial note has long been among the highest face-value banknotes in the world relative to exchange rate — at issuance in 2000, a single example was worth roughly $130 USD, placing it in rare company globally. The Omani Rial's fixed peg to the US dollar, maintained since 1986, meant the Central Bank had little monetary pressure to subdivide or restructure the high-denomination series, so the 50 Rial continued essentially unchanged in role from earlier issues.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement with Omani currency dates back to the early years of the Central Bank itself, established in 1974.
