The Rentenmark was introduced in November 1923 as the instrument that ended Germany's catastrophic hyperinflation, backed not by gold but by a mortgage on all German agricultural and industrial land — a fiction, really, but one that worked precisely because the public chose to believe it. The Rentenbank technically ceased issuing new currency after the Reichsmark was established in 1924, yet existing Rentenmark notes remained legal tender and continued circulating alongside Reichsmark issues well into the 1930s.
This 1934 date reflects a reprint run rather than a new authorization — the Reichsdruckerei continued producing Rentenmark notes to meet residual demand during the early Nazi period, by which point the two currencies were freely interchangeable at parity. The 50 Rentenmark denomination was among the higher-value notes kept in production longest.
