正面描述 A detailed royal crown occupies the central field, rendered with fine engraving showing arches, cross surmount, and jewelled band. The mint date appears in large numerals beneath the crown, flanked on either side by a five-pointed star. The peripheral Latin legend, interrupted by four small star stops, reads PETRUS·V·PORTUG·ET·ALGARB·REX, proclaiming Pedro V as King of Portugal and the Algarves. The overall design is uncluttered, relying entirely on heraldic symbolism rather than a royal portrait.

附加信息

Pedro V came to the throne in 1853 at age sixteen and died in 1861, almost certainly of typhoid fever, aged just twenty-four. His reign was short enough that the entire 50 Reis series in his name was produced within a narrow window, and production figures across the type were modest. The Lisbon mint struck these under persistent pressure to modernize the coinage system, a process that would accelerate sharply under Luís I.

The .917 fineness places this squarely within Portugal's pre-decimal silver standard, abandoned when the country fully adopted the real-denominated decimal system in the reforms that followed shortly after Pedro's death.
