In 1940, the Reichsmünzamt was actively exploring zinc as a wartime substitute for the aluminum and nickel alloys already under pressure from rearmament demands. Pattern strikes in zinc from this period were part of a systematic materials evaluation — not speculative curiosity — as the Reich's war economy required coinage metals to be rerouted to weapons production. Most zinc pattern issues from 1940 never advanced beyond trial status, leaving surviving examples outside normal mintage records entirely.
