Obverse description The field displays the large crowned royal arms of Spain surmounting an inner beaded circle, the shield quartered with the castles of Castile, lions of León, pomegranate of Granada, and the composite arms of the Habsburg dynastic territories, flanked by the denomination numeral '50' to the right and the assayer's mark 'A' to the left. The elaborate royal crown above the shield features ornate floral and foliate decoration rendered in high relief. The circumferential legend in Latin reads PHILIPPVS IIII D G, separated by decorative rosette stops, running along the outer beaded border. The overall composition reflects the monumental scale of this exceptional large-denomination silver piece, struck by the roller mill technique at the Segovia mint.
