This note belongs to Brazil's "Fauna e Flora" polymer series, which the Banco Central do Brasil launched progressively from 2010 onward to replace the earlier cotton-paper issues. The 50 reais denomination in this series features the Serra dos Órgãos national park — one of Brazil's oldest protected areas, established in 1939 in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state.
Polymer adoption in Brazil was partly driven by documented counterfeiting pressures on the 50 reais, historically one of the highest-volume denominations in everyday transactions. De La Rue printed the series.
