The Omron rings — a pattern of small concentric circles embedded in the design to trigger photocopier and scanner suppression — are the distinguishing feature that separates this type from otherwise near-identical issues in the series. Their inclusion reflects a coordinated global response to increasingly affordable digital reproduction equipment, with the EURion constellation pattern (of which Omron rings are one implementation) adopted by central banks worldwide from the late 1990s onward.

Two signatures appear across the emission period: Gill Marcus, who served as Governor until November 2014, and Lesetja Kganyago, who succeeded her. Notes signed by Marcus are from the earlier part of the run.
