| Obverse description | A dramatic close-up portrait of an African elephant rendered in high relief, with the animal's textured skin, ears, and tusks filling the entire field in an imposing frontal composition. The South African coat of arms appears within a circle at the bottom center of the design, flanked by the legends 'SOUTH AFRICA' to the left and 'BIG FIVE' to the right. The date '2024' is incorporated into the lettering arrangement. The intricate sculptural detailing of the elephant's hide and facial features conveys a powerful sense of scale and naturalism characteristic of the Big Five series. |

The Big Five series has cycled through multiple iterations since its gold bullion debut, with the Elephant appearing in each edition as arguably the most commercially reliable of the five subjects — export demand from Southeast Asian markets has historically driven premiums on Elephant-designated issues above the other four. The South African Mint produces these under the mandate of the South African Reserve Bank, which retains strict control over gold bullion licensing in a country that, despite no longer being the world's top gold producer, still refines a substantial share of global output through Rand Refinery in Germiston.
