South Africa's Big Five bullion series has run through multiple iterations since the 1990s, with the Leopard historically among the lower-mintage releases due to collector preference skewing toward the Lion and Elephant issues. The Series II relaunch was authorized following sustained demand from Asian bullion markets, particularly South Korea and China, where fractional gold coins in the quarter-ounce range have displaced heavier denominations in retail investment portfolios since roughly 2018.
