| Obverse description | The obverse presents a close-up naturalistic portrait of a hippopotamus resting partially submerged, its massive head and shoulders rendered in fine sculptural relief with careful attention to the texture of the animal's thick hide. The beast faces right, occupying the greater portion of the coin's field in a bold, naturalistic composition characteristic of the South African Natura series.
