Thomas De La Rue held the Guatemalan printing contract for decades, and this 50 Quetzales belongs to a long-running series that remained essentially stable in design through the late 1960s and into the 1970s — a period of considerable political turbulence in Guatemala, including the guerrilla insurgencies and counterinsurgency campaigns that defined the country's internal conflict during those years. High-denomination notes like this one saw limited everyday use; the 50 Quetzal value was roughly equivalent to several weeks' wages for many Guatemalans at the time.
The series spans a six-year window across multiple date varieties, making precise dating dependent on the signature combination rather than any visible year printed on the face.
