This piece was struck as part of a series of gold patterns produced under the Ba'athist government following the 1963 coup, during a period when Syria was experimenting with monetary reforms and asserting institutional independence after the collapse of the United Arab Republic with Egypt in 1961. Pattern issues of this type were never released for circulation — they served administrative and diplomatic functions, occasionally presented as gifts or submitted for international monetary review.
Surviving examples are few, and provenance is often murky given the political instability Syria experienced through the late 1960s.
