Azerbaijan's second coin series launched in 2006 as the country rebuilt monetary infrastructure following the catastrophic hyperinflation of the early 1990s, when the manat lost virtually all its value and coins disappeared from circulation entirely for years. The bimetallic construction was a deliberate policy choice — brass-plated steel centers are cheaper to produce than solid brass, a practical concession for a denomination that needed to actually circulate.
Production ended in 2011, superseded by the third series issued ahead of currency redenomination pressures.
