Obverse description Central field bears the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan as used from 1980 to 1987, depicting a stylised mihrab (prayer niche) surmounted by a rising sun, flanked by sheaves of wheat bound at the base by a ribbon. A five-pointed star appears at the apex of the device. The Arabic legend reading 'The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan' curves along the upper rim, with the Afghan Solar Hijri date 1359 inscribed at the bottom of the field.
