Concorde's connection to Gibraltar is oblique at best — the aircraft never served the territory and no scheduled service ever landed on the famously short runway at Gibraltar Airport. This is a commemorative issue tied to the 50th anniversary of Concorde's first flight, which took place on 2 March 1969 when the prototype 001 lifted off from Toulouse under the command of André Turcat. The British prototype 002 followed from Filton just under a month later.
At 155.5 grams, this is a five-ounce gold piece — a format that exists primarily as a vehicle for precious metal content rather than circulation.
