The fifth portrait of Elizabeth II — by Jody Clark, selected through an internal Royal Mint process rather than the open competition that produced some earlier effigies — first appeared in 2015 and was the first portrait to be designed by a Royal Mint employee since the second effigy by Mary Gillick in 1952. Clark submitted his design without initially telling his superiors, entering on the encouragement of a colleague.
