The 1990 series was the first to be issued under the newly constituted Government of the Falkland Islands following the 1985 Constitution, which replaced the Crown Colony framework that had governed the islands since 1843. The 50 Pounds was the highest denomination in that series — a significant value for a territory whose resident population at the time numbered fewer than 2,000 people.

De La Rue's involvement with Falklands currency dates back well before 1982, but the political weight of continuing to produce a distinctly British colonial issue after the Argentine occupation and its aftermath gave these notes an administrative importance beyond their face value. The watermark remains the sole documented security feature on this type.
