Churchill's connection to Guernsey is not incidental. As Prime Minister, he made the agonizing decision in June 1940 not to defend the Channel Islands against German occupation — a strategic calculation that left Guernsey's civilian population under Nazi control for nearly five years, the only British territory to suffer that fate. The islands were liberated on 9 May 1945, a date still observed locally as Liberation Day.
The 311g fine silver format places this squarely in the category of display pieces struck for the collector market rather than anything approaching circulation use. At 100mm across, it was produced by the Royal Mint on behalf of the Bailiwick.
