The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace has housed the sovereign's horses and carriages since George III acquired the site in 1760, though the current buildings were completed under John Nash and later Edward Blore in the 1820s and 1830s. It remains a working institution — the horses stabled there still draw the Gold State Coach for coronations, including Charles III's in May 2023, which was only the second time that coach had been used since 1953.
Guernsey has issued large-format silver kilo-class pieces like this one primarily for the collector market, where the 100mm format gives engravers unusual room to work at a level of detail impossible on circulation coinage.
