Bank of Scotland's £50 notes from this period are among the more signature-varied Scottish issues of the late 20th century — four distinct signatory pairs across just over a decade, with the 2003/2004 Mitchell-signed examples absent from the standard Pick catalog. Whether that omission reflects limited distribution, late discovery, or simple editorial oversight is unresolved.
Scottish £50 notes have always circulated reluctantly. Retailers across England routinely refused them, and even within Scotland the denomination saw more drawer time than till time. High-value Scottish notes from this era frequently survive in better condition simply because they were used infrequently.
