The Bank of Sudan's late-1980s issues, including this 50 Pounds, came during a period of acute fiscal pressure following the 1985 ousting of Nimeiry and the subsequent revolving governments that struggled to stabilize a collapsing economy. Sudan's chronic budget deficits through this period drove repeated expansions of the money supply, and the 50 Pounds denomination — substantial when first issued — was eroding in real value almost as fast as notes could be printed and distributed.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement speaks to Sudan's continued reliance on offshore security printing well into the late 1980s, when domestic capacity remained limited. The watermark and security thread were standard De La Rue provision for the series, though counterfeiting pressure on Sudanese currency was less the concern than sheer inflationary volume.
